A linked set of documents: the Case of the Airline's Documents

An airline needed to regularly produce a documentation set in PDF. The source documents were being maintained in Word. They would like for a clickable Table of Contents to the whole set to be available in each separate document. Programming staff were at a loss as to how to do this.

What was achieved

We added a button to the Word menu bar. Clicking on it opens a dialog in which you specify which Word styles are to be included in the overall table of contents. Next, an updated PDF version of the complete set is produced. In any of these PDFs the table of contents to the whole collection is reflected in the Bookmarks panel to the left of the Acrobat Reader screen.

What it took

Working closely with the person responsible for the documentation set, we rapidly developed a customized version of PDFLinks (see Downloads). Even when it turned out that the documents used a mixture of left-to-right and right-to-left scripts, this problem was quickly resolved.
